The American Hand-Split Cane Rod
Submitted by: Heartland Member Ron McAlpin
"I had seen some of Dennis' antiquing work, and so I wanted this rod to be traditional and have the look of an old rod. I picked everything to blend...a Spanish cedar spacer on the seat for the traditional look; transluscent gold wraps to have the look of faded silk. He turned the grooves in the cap and band, blued then antiqued them and did the same matching treatment to the ferrules. He made the grip to my specs - I sent him photos and measurements of my favorite grips, and he shaped it to my preferences, but still finished it to his own eye. I had told Dennis, "while I want this to be my rod, I want it to be your art." He certainly came through."

Not Your Average Angler
Submitted by: Specialist Reggie Kalous/ 25th Infantry Division Iraq
"Iraq is different but the same in some ways. Many people here have a skill or trade and that is what they do. From electricians to carpenters to mechanics. Seeing how they fish is similar in other cultures. They use a plastic bottle wrapped with string and thrown into the small canals or streams. Similar to fishing many lines for catfish. It got my itch going again and was thinking about building my rods and how much I miss it...."
